Hearts have taken former Motherwell winger Elliott Frear on trial.

Robbie Neilson is keen to bolster his options in wide areas, and has brought Frear in to take a look at him  as Hearts get their pre-season training underway, the Daily Record reports.

He had hoped to tempt Sam Nicholson back to Tynecastle, but the wide man opted to try his luck in England with Bristol City instead.

Now attention has turned to the left-sided Frear, who would provide a more experienced alternative to Lewis Moore on the left hand side of the Jambos' midfield.

Fear was close to signing for Neilson at Dundee United last September, but that fell through and he returned to previous club Forest Green Rovers o a short-term deal, that was later extended in January until the end of the season.

Neilson is also thought to be after winger for the other flank and also another central midfielder.

Olly Lee has returned from a loan spell at Gillingham and is part of Neilson's plans for the coming season, while Peter Haring made his long awaited return to training after missing over a year with a pelvic problem.
