Youth players at Hibernian have returned to training amid easing of restrictions surrounding COVID-19.

The Easter Road club mothballed their player development programme for a short period in an effort to make their East Mains training facility bio-secure ahead of the Scottish Premiership kicking off last weekend.

It was previously reported the club was set to shut down the much vaunted academy - which produced the likes of current first team stars Jamie Gullan and Ryan Porteous - for a longer stretch in the wake of cost-cutting measures.

However, owner Ron Gordon assured fans the youth setup was only "on pause" in June and that young hopefuls were still being "engaged and involved" while the game remained on hiatus.

Sporting director Graeme Mathie confirmed on Twitter that Hibs' potential stars of the future were back on the training pitch in East Lothian after the Scottish government began lifting certain regulations on non-professional sporting activity.

Outdoor sports coaching was permitted to resume from Monday, August 3 - with some Hibs youngsters returning the same day.

Mathie wrote: "Brilliant to see the ⁦ @HibernianFC. Academy back. Lots of smiles on faces this week!"

Gordon had previously alleviated fears the much-lauded East Mains production line was to be dissolved forever as he promised "sunnier days ahead" for the green and white faithful despite the financial challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

In a supporter update in June, he told Hibs TV: " The academy is on pause for now, We are still engaging with our youngsters and keeping them involved, but there’s really not going to be a lot of activity there.

"The whole club is on pause right now as we are sailing through a very difficult time.

"When we come out of it i’m very optimistic that the club is going to be in a very good position to move forward and accelerate at a really good pace."
