Hearts star Sean Clare is a transfer target for English club Oxford United, according to reports.

The 23-year-old is allegedly top of Karl Robinson's shortlist should the U's fail to land former Kilmarnock full back Stephen O'Donnell.

O'Donnell is reportedly set on testing himself in the English Championship after leaving Rugby Park on a free transfer.

And if he chooses not to link up with Robinson, the Oxford boss is intent on turning his attention to Clare after missing out on his signature before the versatile player joined Hearts.

Clare moved to Edinburgh in 2018 from Sheffield Wednesday but has had to take a wage cut with the rest of the Tynecastle first-team squad after the Covid-19 lockdown.

The Daily Record reports new Hearts boss Robbie Neilson will have to reduce the size of his squad before any incomings arrive in Gorgie.

Neilson has handed a trial to former Motherwell winger Elliott Frear and has been linked with a bid for Dundee United midfielder Callum Butcher.

League One Oxford missed out on promotion to the Championship after losing the third tier play off final to Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley.

The U's are likely to have funds to back up their interest with star defender Rob Dickie and midfield playmaker Cameron Brannagan linked with big moves away from the club.
