Hickey's former manager Craig Levein claimed Celtic made at least six bids for the youngster during his time in charge of the club.

However, Bayern are reportedly hoping to jump the queue by offering Hickey a look around their state of the art training ground in Bavaria.

The German champions already have former Celtic youth star Liam Morrison on their books and have been tipped to seal the signing of another youth product from the Premiership holders, with striker Barry Hepburn rumoured to be joining the side.

Hickey has played with both at youth international level and could be persuaded to link up with the pair again on the continent.

The teenager initially came through the ranks at Parkhead and Levein claimed Neil Lennon made various attempts to bring him back along the M8 after he made his first team bow at Tynecastle.

Levein told BBC Scotland : "Celtic tried to buy him back half-a-dozen times and that just got knocked back.

"Celtic tried to buy him back while he was in the first team, I think it was five or six times."

However, Bologna sporting director Walter Sabatini has also hinted at a move for the youngster after the club shifted its focus on recruitment to players outside Italy.

Hickey could join former Hibs and Celtic star Liam Henderson and Fiorentina's Lana Clelland in flying the the flag for Scotland in Italy.

“It’s no secret we are looking for a full back and a centre midfielder because the team needs to be reinforced,” said Sabatini.

“From an economic point of view, we feel there is better value in the market outside Italy.

If you want a tip about our next signing, I can tell you he will be a young player from abroad.

“We want a player who is comfortable attacking and is also a goal threat. We have improved and expanded our level of scouting and are looking at different markets.

“Our aim is to keep our best players and expand the squad with good young players for next season.”
